Water-Damaged Phone? Do This First (And What NOT to Do)

Updated 2025 • ~3–4 min read • iPhone & Android

Immediate Checklist

  • Power off immediately. Electricity + moisture = corrosion risk.
  • Don’t charge it. Charging can short components.
  • Remove case/SIM. Gently pat dry; avoid shaking the device.
  • Air, not rice. Rice won’t remove residues; airflow helps while you arrange service.

Avoid heat: Hair dryers, ovens, or radiators can warp plastics and push liquid deeper under ICs.

Why Speed Matters

Liquid leaves conductive salts that corrode metal when power is present. The faster the phone is powered down and cleaned, the better the chance of recovery. Even “water-resistant” phones are vulnerable once seals are compromised by impact or age.

What Professional Cleaning Includes

  • Disassembly & battery isolation to stop current flow.
  • Inspection for corrosion under shields and near connectors.
  • Board & connector cleaning with proper solvents and tools.
  • Testing of display, charge, cameras, and radios after reassembly.

Data & Expectations

If the logic board or storage is severely corroded, data recovery may require lab-level work. Tell us if photos/texts are the priority; we’ll advise the best path. Success rates improve dramatically when the phone is powered off quickly and seen within 24–48 hours.

Next Steps

  • Keep the device off; don’t test “just to see.”
  • Arrange mobile service; we can meet at home, work, or a public place.
  • Expect a transparent assessment and options if parts were damaged.
